Allegheny Hockey's
competitive hockey program allows players to play a full season of
hockey with a mixture of practices and games. Allegheny fields
teams for the following age groups:
-
Mini-Mites (Birth-year
2004 and younger)
-
Mites (Birth-years
2002 and 2003)
-
Squirts (Birth-years
2000 and 2001)
-
Peewees (Birth-years
1998 and 1999)
-
Bantams (Birth-years
1996 and 1997)
-
Midgets (Birth-years
1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995)
In each age group
Allegheny typically has teams at the AA, A, and B Level. Players
are placed on teams based on their skill level and developmental needs
determined by the results of our annual tryouts. Tryouts are held annually
in early May for the AA teams, and in mid-June for our A and B level
teams.
All teams will normally
have have one weeknight practice and then either games or practices on
the weekends. The season starts in September and goes through
February. Games are played in the Pittsburgh
Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). The
league consists of Pittsburgh area teams, along with teams from
Erie, Wheeling, Altoona, and State College.
The season ends with
either playoffs or season-end tournaments, based on the age group.
Allegheny Hockey has been very successful over the years in the
season-end tournaments and in the playoffs. In the 2009-2010
season we had four teams win their playoff brackets, and another team
make it to the playoff finals. Also, our Midget 16U A / B Team found
success by winning the state playdown tournament, which has earned them
a birth in the USA Hockey National Tournament to be held starting April
7, 2010.
Our competitive teams will
also typically play in several tournaments throughout the season.
These tournaments may be local, like the Allegheny Hockey Thanksgiving
Tournament, or they may be out of town in Cleveland, Rochester,
Washington, D.C., or a host of other places. The number of
tournaments and locations are determined on a team by team basis.
Tryouts for these teams
occurs in two stages. AA Team Tryouts are held in May, followed by
a summer skate program. A and B Team Tryouts are held in the
middle of June, with practices starting in mid-August.
